The Isturitz and Oxocelhaya caves

Réservation
Saint-Martin-d'Arberoue

Our opinion

Thirty minutes from Bayonne, in Saint-Martin-d'Arberoue, the two caves make up a single site for European prehistory. Famous, worldwide, occupied since 80,000 BC. J.-C., the Caves are decorated with magnificent and surprising concretions. Isturitz was the place of regrouping of populations of the Pyrenean-Cantabrian chain; Oxocelhaya was its sanctuary.

Details of the activity

Emblematic site of prehistory, a reference for the history of Man and the understanding of his art of living. Major site of gathering of populations in the Upper Paleolithic in the same way as the Mas d'Azil in Ariège and the Vézère Valley in Dordogne. Prehistoric animals (cave bears, wolverines, reindeer, horses, aurochs, etc.) also frequented our caves or their proximity, as evidenced by the hunting weapons found, the artistic representations of animals on the walls or movable objects. prehistoric, as well as the fossils and traces of passage of the said animals. The second oldest musical instrument in the world, an exceptional four-hole flute made from vulture bone dating back 32,000 years, was found there.
