The Basque Corniche

Office de Tourisme
Hendaye

Our opinion

Impressive with its high flysch cliffs against which the waves crash, the Basque Corniche, between Hendaye and Saint-Jean-de-Luz, offers exceptional landscapes of the ocean and the mountains. It is explored on foot, by the coastal path to discover a unique plant ecosystem and wild creeks. Guided hikes with the Urrugne tourist office.

Details of the activity

La Corniche Basque, a major natural space on the Basque coast! A natural masterpiece 8 kilometers long between Hendaye and Saint-Jean-de-Luz, the Basque corniche offers a unique panorama made up of cliffs plunging into the ocean with the Pyrenees mountains in the background. Last natural space of the Basque coast, you will meet there sheep and cows related to the agricultural activity still existing here as well as the vines of the Egiategia cellar. Walking on the coastal path is a very good way to discover the Basque coast. To the north and south of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, the coastal path divides into 2 sections of similar length, each of which has its particularity: - Southern part: This is the Basque cornice. From the Abbadia estate in Hendaye to Fort Socoa (and the bay of Saint-Jean-de-Luz - Ciboure). Undoubtedly the most natural and verdant part of the Basque coast. You will discover wild creeks as well as many viewpoints on the ocean and the mountain. At times the path runs along the departmental road from which you will be protected by a safety rail. You will therefore have understood that this section can be traveled by car but if you do, you will not discover the many wild coves! - Northern part: From Saint-Jean-de-Luz - Ciboure to Biarritz - Bidart via Guéthary. You will pass by many beaches and surf spots as well as in front of as many guinguettes and beachside bars. A more trendy part but just as beautiful! The train and the bus make it easy to complete your hike so don't hesitate to explore the coastal path and that of the Basque corniche! Top tip: Every year in September, the Basque Corniche is celebrated and the road is closed to traffic. Animations, games, exhibition and discovery workshops are offered to all. This is an opportunity for a 100% nature outing with family or friends!
