Details of the activity

Located at the mouth of the Bidasoa, Fontarabie (Hondarribia) is a city with a long maritime and tourist tradition on the coast of Guipúzcoa. Its fortified old town is teeming with stately buildings and has been classified as a Historic-Artistic Monument. According to legend, Hondarribia was founded by the Visigoth King Reccared in the 6th century AD. The name of this city appears for the first time in the city charter (“carta-puebla”) that the Navarrese king Sancho the Wise granted to San Sebastian in 1150. Hondarribia received from the crown of Castile the "fuero" of St. Sebastian. The city suffered several sieges during its history, the most famous having taken place in the 17th century. Its condition as a stronghold in the Bidasoa estuary is the origin of its imposing ramparts surrounding the city. Their good state of preservation has earned the city the status of Historic and Artistic Monument.
